Halhale National Agricultural Research Institute Promoting Select Seeds

The Halhale National Agricultural Research Institute is playing crucial role in producing select seeds, and thus boosting output towards achieving food security, according to Dr. Eyasu Gebretatios, director general of the Institute.

Halhale, 14 February 2011 – The Halhale National Agricultural Research Institute is playing crucial role in producing select seeds, and thus boosting output towards achieving food security, according to Dr. Eyasu Gebretatios, director general of the Institute.

He explained that research has been undertaken in various crops like sorghum, beans, wheat, maize and barley which were subsequently distributed to farmers and yielded good output. Dr. Eyasu noted that utilization of seeds that are suitable to the country’s climate and have good disease resistance could enable farmers to raise production by 50%.

Stating that the Institute is making due contribution in the supply of fruits and vegetables, he said that the research conducted in orange, lemon, banana and the like proved to be successful. The director general further indicated that farmers were not managing to properly utilize the research findings of the institute on previous occasions. At present, nonetheless, the farmer-centered research methodology currently in force   would prompt still more research undertakings, Dr. Eyasu added.
