Over 70% Inhabitants Of Southern Region Obtain Efficient Transport And Communications Services

Land transport service has been introduced to more than 70% of the villages in the Southern region, besides the installation of telephone and postal services to most sub-zones, according to Mr. Mehari Habte, the head of land transport in the region.

Mendefera, 1March 2011 – Land transport service has been introduced to more than 70% of the villages in the Southern region, besides the installation of telephone and postal services to most sub-zones, according to Mr. Mehari Habte, the head of land transport in the region.

He told ERINA that there were only 96 buses deployed in 30 lines in the year 2000, but now have grown to 358 and 80 respectively. He also added that the transport system in the region has rendered services to over 100 million passengers.

Moreover, Mr. Mehari said that the people have renovated feeder roads and bought buses with the collaboration of cooperatives which made due contribution in alleviating and developing transport services.

Reports disclosed that 24-hour electricity supply and telephone services have been available to 8 sub-zones of the region, and sub-zones of Emni-Haili, Areza, Tsorona, Mai-Mine are getting partial supply. In addition, regular postal services were provided to all semi-urban centers.
