The putting in place of communications infrastructure facilities in the post-independence era is playing paramount role in improving the living standard of the people, stated the acting head of communications services division in the Ministry of  Transport and Communications, Eng. Mekonen Fesehatsion.

Asmara, 2 March 2011 – The putting in place of communications infrastructure facilities in the post-independence era is playing paramount role in improving the living standard of the people, stated the acting head of communications services division in the Ministry of  Transport and Communications, Eng. Mekonen Fesehatsion.

 

In an interview in connection with the Ministry’s symposium, Mr. Mekonen gave briefings regarding the major programs accomplished in postal, mobile telephone and internet services, as well as future work programs.
Mr. Mekonen explained that the main objective of the division includes creating conducive environment for regulation of communications networks, creating fair, competitive and efficient market environment, besides ensuring the provision of telecommunications and postal services. He also said that the work accomplishment within 20 years couldn’t be viewed lightly.

Moreover, Mr. Mekonen stated that the expansion of postal services branch offices in all regions and its efficient services has enabled it to win awards from the International Postal Organization five times.
Speaking of telecommunication services, he said that advanced digitalized communication equipments have been installed and enabled the establishment of a network between Eritrean towns through micro-wave and mobile telephone services. Mr. Mekonen also added that expanding of international internet fiber-optics connection through the Red Sea to Massawa is one of the major programs of the division scheduled to be implemented.
