Impressive achievements scored in education sector in Gash-Barka region: Report

In line with vigorous endeavors made over the past 20 years to expand educational opportunity in all parts of the country, the number of schools in Gash-Bark region increased by over 500%, according to Mr. Kelit Girmai, director of the Education Ministry’s branch in the region. Barentu, 5 March 2011 – In line with vigorous endeavors made over the past 20 years to expand educational opportunity in all parts of the country, the number of schools in Gash-Bark region increased by over 500%, according to Mr. Kelit Girmai, director of the Education Ministry’s branch in the region.

He indicated that out of 189 administrative areas in the region, the 171 have access to educational institutions, which in turn raised student enrollment by 700%.  The number of students has now reached over 100,000, he added. 

Noting that the number of teachers has equally showed a growth of 560%, Mr. Kelit explained that the local inhabitants and administrative bodies in the region have contributed about 11.6 million Nakfa on various occasion with a view to improving teachers’ standard of living.

Also as part of efforts to eradicate illiteracy, 37% of the inhabitants of the region have now able to read and write. Mr. Kelit further pointed out that impressive achievements have been scored in the education sector that serve as a steppingstone for building a prosperous nation in which social justice prevail.
