Southern region: Vegetable farmers determined to boost production

Farmers engaged in vegetable farming activities below micro-dams in various sub-zones of the Southern region voiced determination to redouble efforts in boosting output. They explained that they would make optimum use of drip irrigation, modern fertilizers, select seeds and crop rotation in raising agricultural productivity.

Mendefera, 19 March 2011 – Farmers engaged in vegetable farming activities below micro-dams in various sub-zones of the Southern region voiced determination to redouble efforts in boosting output. They explained that they would make optimum use of drip irrigation, modern fertilizers, select seeds and crop rotation in raising agricultural productivity.

In a meeting with the regional Administrator, Mr. Mustafa Nurhusein, the farmers stated that they are now in a position to harvest three times a year thanks to the available water resource and the consultation provided by agricultural experts.

Mr. Mustafa noted the need for farmers to work tirelessly in obtaining bumper harvest and said that the regional Administration in collaboration with concerned parties, would strive in supplying their products to the public for the mutual benefit of both farmers and the general public. 

Reports indicated that there exist over 10,000 hectares of vegetable farms blew micro-dams in 12 sub-zones of the Southern region.
