Major infrastructure facilities have been implemented over the past 20 years of independence in the Northern Red Sea region at an expenditure of 8 billion Nakfa, disclosed Mr. Musie Misgina, director general of infrastructure in the region.
Massawa, 20 March 2011 – Major infrastructure facilities have been implemented over the past 20 years of independence in the Northern Red Sea region at an expenditure of 8 billion Nakfa, disclosed Mr. Musie Misgina, director general of infrastructure in the region.
In an interview he conducted in connection with the upcoming symposium of the region scheduled to be held from 25 to 26 March, he said that the implemented infrastructure projects includes drafting of a master plan, construction of roads and houses, provision of water project, energy, communications and transportation which in turn are making due contribution in improving the living standard of the people.
Accordingly, he stated that master plans of Massawa, Afabet , Gahtelai and Nacfa have been outlined, and that a number of schools as well as health institutions were constructed. The director general also stated that the role of national construction companies of Gedem, Mussa-Ali, and Segen were enormous in the undertaken infrastructure projects.
Moreover, Mr. Musie said that the construction of residential houses in Dembe Kutmia in 2000 for 536 families, and the nearly finalized houses for 478 families could be cited as an example of the on-going endeavors. He added that there exist seven major road networks which connect the region with other regions. The roads from Serjeka to Shebah , Massawa to Assab and the under construction Egila –Demhina – Foro and Emahmime- Karora roads are some of road projects.
Mr. Musie explained that the 5-year strategic work program from 2011 to 2016 includes construction and renovation of schools, health institutions, digging wells, expansion of electricity lines and mapping out of master plan.
Reports disclosed that there are 240 Km long asphalt roads, 318 Km. dirt roads, and 2,768 Km. rough roads in the Northern Red Sea region.
