The 23rd anniversary of the demise of the Nadew Command and the liberation of Afabet town was commemorated in patriotic spirit. Afabet, 23 March 2011 – The 23rd anniversary of the demise of the Nadew Command and the liberation of Afabet town was commemorated in patriotic spirit.
The commemorative event in which the Administrator of Gash-Barka region, Mr. Mussa Rab’a, government officials, invited guests and thousands of nationals took part, various cultural and sports activities, as well as other programs highlighting the heroic feats of the freedom fighters were featured.
The Administrator of Afabet sub-zone, Mr. Abdu Mohammed Talke, underlined that the demise of the Nadew Command was swift and coordinated operation that marked the transformation of the EPLF from defending to attacking. It also laid solid ground for embarking on Fenkil Operation, he added.
One of the village elders, Mr. Abir Ali, said on his part that the demise of the Command paved the way for the liberation of Massawa and subsequently to total independence. This year’s commemoration of the great event is special as it is being held at a time when all-round development programs are bearing tangible outcome, he added.
Also speaking on the occasion, the Administrator of the region, Mr. Mussa Rab’a , gave briefings on the Operation and said that documentation of history should proceed parallel to development endeavors.
It is to be noted that the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front dealt a crushing defeat to the heavily armed Nadew Command of the Derg regime from 17 to 19 March 1988. The 72 hour-long swift operation culminated in the demise of the Nadew Command and the liberation of Afabet town.
