Asmara, 23 March 2011 – The inhabitants of 3 sub-zones in Central region voiced determination to enhance participation in development programs envisaged for implementation this year in an enhanced manner.
They expressed the commitment in a meeting the regional Administrator, Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwet, held with the representatives of the people focusing on the envisaged development programs.
The Administrator indicated that various action plans are in the process of implementation with a view to achieving food security. On top of soil and water conservation activities being reinforced across the region, preparations have been finalized to plant over 4.5 million tree seedlings, he elaborated.
Mr. Kahsai further called on members of the farming community to level their farmland in advance so that they may obtain bumper harvest. He also said that efforts to plant highland fruits would be stepped up this year and called on farmers to back up the move.
The Administrator said that concerted action is being taken to prevent deforestation, and that serious punishment is being resorted to against irresponsible individuals involved in the cutting down of trees.
