Asmara, 27 March 2011- The Director General of the Energy department at the Ministry of Energy and Mining, Mr. Samuel Baire said that a number of big projects had been implemented in the past 20 years of independence to ensure equitable distribution of energy supply.
In an interview with ERINA in connection with the Ministry’s symposium to be held in Massawa from 29 to 30 March, Mr. Samuel said that power supply was available to only 10 % of the population at merely 30 megawatt power during independence. However, as a result of the efforts carried out to expand electricity supply 33% of the population now receive power services at 134 megawatts, he added.
Mr. Samuel further indicated that the construction of the Hirgigo power plant and distribution centers in Tessenei, Barentu, Assab, Adi Keih, as well as the upgrading of the voltage from 110 to 220 included some of the major projects implemented in the sector.
Pointing out that the primary task of the energy department is to ensure the distribution of power supply in the whole country, the director general said that gas distribution centers are under construction in Mendefera, Keren and Dekemhare and that work is underway to ensure sustainable supply of fuel.
Mr. Samuel went on to add that studies are underway to exploit renewable sources of energy such as wind and solar energy. Wind turbines in Assab are already producing 750 Kilowatt power, covering 20% of the port city’s electricity consumption, he further indicated.
The director general explained that owing to the efforts made in the 20 years of independence, 200 villages have been able to receive electricity supply, while 100 more are benefiting from solar generated power. “Ensuring equitable distribution of power supply in the whole country, promoting the provision of gas and fuel supply as well as developing renewable sources of energy include of the major projects that are being implemented in this sector,” Mr. Samuel stated.
