Student Enrollment Increases By 600% In The Gash Barka Region

During an assessment meeting of the Gash Barka region branch office of the Ministry of Education, it was disclosed that the number of students and schools in the region have risen in folds owing to the efforts made in the past 20 years to increase the distribution of educational services and opportunities.

Barentu, 29 March 2011- During an assessment meeting of the Gash Barka region branch office of the Ministry of Education, it was disclosed that the number of students and schools in the region have risen in folds owing to the efforts made in the past 20 years to increase the distribution of educational services and opportunities.

 

It was indicated at the meeting in Barentu that the number of schools has increased from 74 before independence to 347 at present and that student enrollment has risen by 600%.
According to the report presented by the head of the branch office, Mr. Kelit Girmay, schools are distributed over 173 administrative areas and that 13 nomadic schools have been established in this academic year alone while student enrollment increased by 12% in 2010.

Moreover, over 1,400 teachers were provided with skills upgrading training and 176 others attended two-year correspondence studies, while 175 educational stations have been opened for those who were not able to attend school at the right age.

Mr. Kelit finally reminded the need for the collaboration of all government bodies and the society at large for more effective results in ensuring equal distribution of educational opportunities and increasing the participation of female students.

The participants of the meeting on their part called for more efficient provision of text books.
