The head of the Education Ministry’s branch in Northern Red Sea region, Mr. Yasin Mohammed, said that major achievements have been scored as regards expansion of schools and promoting active student participation in education over the past 20 years. Massawa, 1 April 2011 – The head of the Education Ministry’s branch in Northern Red Sea region, Mr. Yasin Mohammed, said that major achievements have been scored as regards expansion of schools and promoting active student participation in education over the past 20 years.
He explained that the number of schools that used to stand at 28 prior to independence has now increased to 381. As a result, the number of student enrollment has climbed from 9,000 to over 56,000, and that the number of teachers has shown a growth of 300%.
Mr. Yasin further indicated over 63% of the people in the region are now able to read and write thanks to the vigorous endeavors made to eradicate illiteracy. Efforts are also underway to expand educational opportunity to nationals leading pastoral way of life through setting up mobile schools.
He outlined that the future program of the branch office would focus on opening more schools in different parts of the region, tackling student dropout, minimizing illiteracy rate and the like.
Reports indicated that there are 42 kindergartens, 120 elementary, 45 junior, 2 boarding schools and 11 secondary schools, as well as 146 stations for Adult Education Program in the region.
