Asmara, 2 April 2011 – A meeting of regional Administrators was today conducted at the Denden Hall here in the capital. It was disclosed that preparations are underway to put over 545,000 hectares under cultivation this year in all the country’s administrative regions.
In a paper he presented at the meeting regarding the integrated agricultural program for 2011, the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, outlined the action programs drawn up at the national level and the requisite budget for its implementation. In this connection, he emphasized the paramount importance of ensuring that the agricultural activities in all the administrative regions be undertaken in line with national development plan and on the basis of coordinated management.
Accordingly, the greater portion of the budget proposal focuses on conserving and developing of the nation’s natural resources. To this end, on top of the existing infrastructure facilities, additional large and small-scale water storage facilities and water diversion schemes need to be constructed in every administrative region, besides developing irrigation farming. The national agricultural program also deals with boosting crop harvest and animal husbandry, as well as promoting fruits and vegetables farming.
The meeting subsequently conducted extensive discussion on the paper presented by the Ministry of Agriculture. Taking note of the tasks so far accomplished as regards the deployment of manpower and machineries, making available fertilizers, pesticides and other requirements, it exchanged views on future programs and timetable for their implementation.
The meeting of the regional Administrator underlined the need for enhancing the role of public, government institutions, the PFDJ and mass associations towards raising productivity and reinforcing efforts to achieve food security. The meeting concluded its session adopting resolutions and work directives concerning the issue of reorganizing the Ministry of Local Government, strengthening administrative regions and developing information centers.
