Executive Committee Of Association Of Churches Of East Africa, The Horn And The Great Lakes Holds Meeting Here
The meeting of the Executive Committee of the Association of Churches of East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes region was conducted here in Asmara from 28 March to April 1.
Asmara, 5April 2011- The meeting of the Executive Committee of the Association of Churches of East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes region was conducted here in Asmara from 28 March to April 1.
In an opening speech, His Holiness Abune Dioskoros, 4th Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, called on the participants to strive for fostering understanding and harmony among the members.
Also speaking on the occasion, the Eritrean Mufti, Sheik Al-Amin Osman Al-Amin, noted that Eritrea is known for being the land of peace and refuge for displaced people beginning from ancient times. He further stated that the followers of both the Christian and Islamic faiths have always co-existed in peace and mutual respect, and that such an asset is worth emulating by other countries.
The Director of the Executive Committee, the Rev. Fred Nayabara, stated on his part that the Association is duty bound to accomplish its tasks in a spirit of mutual understanding. He also pledged to do his level best for the realization of the objectives of the Association.
The participants of the meeting visited the Debre Sina Monastery and historical sites in Keren and its environs, as well as, the port city of Massawa and historical places in the surroundings.
Congo is serving as chairman of the Association and Eritrea holds the deputy chairmanship. Other members of the Association are the Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi and Ethiopia.
