Symposium of Gash-Barka region concludes

The symposium of the Gash-Barka region concluded today. In the course of the symposium, study papers were presented followed by discussions focusing on implementation of major development programs and the tasks accomplished in various sectors towards ensuring equitable distribution of social services.

Barentu, 9 April 2011 – The symposium of the Gash-Barka region concluded today. In the course of the symposium, study papers were presented followed by discussions focusing on implementation of major development programs and the tasks accomplished in various sectors towards ensuring equitable distribution of social services.    
The paper presented by the head of the Education Ministry’s branch office in the region, Mr. Kelit Girmai, highlighted the expansion of schools from 38 to 341, and that 90% of the administrative areas are now providing educational opportunity to nationals. He added that student enrollment has equally increased by about 700%, and that 37% of the population in Gash-Barka has managed to eradicate illiteracy as a result of relentless efforts. Moreover, Mr. Kelit explained that the extension of schools has contributed to the expansion of education for the benefit of nationals leading nomadic pattern of living.
Similarly, the director of the regional Administration office, Mr. Awrelyo Jokomino, outlined the effective work accomplished in rehabilitating returnee nationals from the Diasporas and those displaced due to the TPLF regimes war of aggression, among others.
The participants of the symposium observed an exhibition organized in connection with the event. Airing out their impressions, they said that the achievements registered Gash-Barka over the past 20 years as regards ensuring health, education, potable water supply and other basic social services to the public are impressive.
