Major programs were implemented in Gash-Barka region as regards ensuring land ownership of citizens and alleviating land problems pertaining to residential housing, agriculture, business ventures and service-rendering institutions, according to Mr. Bereket Kidane, head of the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment’s branch in the region. Barentu, 5 May 2011 – Major programs were implemented in Gash-Barka region as regards ensuring land ownership of citizens and alleviating land problems pertaining to residential housing, agriculture, business ventures and service-rendering institutions, according to Mr. Bereket Kidane, head of the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment’s branch in the region.
He indicated that land plots have been allotted to over 16,000 nationals for residential housing, business firms, agriculture and various service-rendering institutions.
Mr. Bereket explained that out of the total request for business ventures in all the administrative regions in the country, 34% was in Gash-Barka region, which attests to the flourishing of trading activities in the region. He further stated that close follow up is being taken to ensure land plots for agriculture purpose be utilized in a manner that guarantees sound ecology. In this connection, he pointed out that 44% of those who request land for agriculture have become beneficiaries.
Also in line with the land leveling scheme implemented in 2009, a total of 107,000 nationals have become beneficiaries of land for agriculture purpose, Mr. Bereket added.
