Independence Day celebrations officially get underway in Assab

Celebrations of the 20th anniversary of Independence Day officially got underway in Assab town today in a colorfully manner under the theme: “Perfect Harmony for National Dignity.”
Assab, 13 May 2011 – Celebrations of the 20th anniversary of Independence Day officially got underway in Assab town today in a colorfully manner under the theme: “Perfect Harmony for National Dignity.”

Speaking at the opening of the ceremony, the Minister of Tourism, Ms. Askalu Menkerios, pointed out that the Eritrean people, who were denied independence for the sake of serving the geopolitical agenda of special interest groups, paid dear sacrifices above any other peoples to achieve independence.

She further indicated  that the precious sacrifices paid for achieving independence and safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty made it possible for celebrating Independence Day with strong popular enthusiasm. Ms. Askala highlighted the impressive development achievements registered since independence amid wide-ranging acts of conspiracy on the part of enemy quarters.

The chairman of the holidays coordinating committee in the Southern Red Sea region, Mr. Dawit Mengisteab, said on his part that the past 20 years fully attest to the development and progress registered by the Eritrean people.

The celebrations that were transmitted live through ERI-TV and Dimtsi Hafash featured various programs, including military parade, sea carnival and students’ show, as well as a number of songs and other artistic shows highlighting the event.
