Gash-Barka Region: Tangible Outcome Registered In Illiteracy Eradication Campaign

Barentu, 1 June 2011 – A meeting held in Barentu town took note of the encouraging outcome registered in illiteracy eradication campaign in Gash-Barka region.

At a meeting in which sub-zonal administrators, branch heads of the Education Ministry and other guests took part, the head of the Ministry’s branch in the region, Mr. Kelit Girmai, pointed out that Adult Education Program is underway in an enhanced manner and that teaching stations are providing educational opportunities to nationals who failed to attend classes at the right age. He further noted that the program is being undertaken in 14 sub-zones of the region with encouraging outcome.

The head of the PFDJ branch in the region, Mr. Rezene Adonai, said on his part that the inhabitants of the region who used to be deprived of educational opportunity due to successive colonial rules are now enjoying equitable educational opportunities thanks to the Government’s commitment.

Reports indicated that illiteracy eradication stations are available in 179 administrative areas, and that a number of nationals are now able to read and write.
