Minister Stresses Need To Enhance Fish Breeding In Dams

In a seminar he conducted in Adi-Quala town, the Minister of Marine Resources, Mr. Tewolde Kelati, called on agricultural and life skill experts, as well as sub-zonal and area administrators to enhance the breeding of fish in micro-dams. Adi-Quala, 3 June 2011 – In a seminar he conducted in Adi-Quala town, the Minister of Marine Resources, Mr. Tewolde Kelati, called on agricultural and life skill experts, as well as sub-zonal and area administrators to enhance the breeding of fish in micro-dams.

He stated that breeding fish in fresh water is a lucrative business that does not require much expense. In this regard, Mr. Tewolde stressed the need for the concerned bodies to introduce such activities at the grassroots level.  Reports indicated that fish breeding activities are already underway in 11 dams in the Southern region.

Likewise, the regional Administrator, Mr. Mustafa Nurhusein, explained that the Administration is undertaking continued campaign to raise public awareness regarding fishing techniques and fish consumption habits. He also called on the Ministry to enhance initiatives in this regard.

Fish breeding activities have been underway in the Southern region since 2007 in the dams of Mai-Aron, Qaqbida, Azaiha, Sememo, Adi-Nifas Areza, Adi-Nifas Dekemhare, Dirko, Harnet, Chafa, Sesewe and Una-Fer’on, and that such fish is  in good condition.

The participants of the seminar adopted a number of resolutions and recommendations highlighting the need for the Ministry to make fishing tools available, besides providing continued advices and information.
