More Schools And Additional Classrooms Under Construction In Southern Region

A total of 23 new schools and additional classrooms in 13 schools are under construction in the Southern region at an expenditure of 190 million Nakfa in a bid to accommodate the growing number of students, according to Eng. He explained that three quarter of the project has been finalized and that the people are taking active participation in the undertaking. Accordingly, 8 high schools are being constructed in Mendefera, Segeneiti, Adi-Keih, Senafe, Dekemhare, Kuatiti and Mai-Aini respectively which would enroll about 9,000 students, stated Mr. Kaliab Tesfaslasie, head of the Education Ministry’s branch in the region. He further called on parents to properly follow up their children’s academic performance.

The inhabitants of the respective localities expressed satisfaction with the initiative and that their children used to travel long distance to attend class.

Meanwhile, the construction of teachers’ residence in remote areas of Adi-Merho, Bahnuna, Lahyo, Debremariam, Adi-Ashker, Ala, Adegolbo, Adi-Hisae, Kelai-Beatit, Adibhailai, Mekabir-Tsabla, Adi-Gosa, Endabastifanos, Mai-Mine, Mai-Dima and Mai-Tera at a total cost of 14 million Nakfa is nearing finalization.

The project under implementation includes 7 elementary schools, 8 junior and 8 secondary schools. Besides, there exist over 120 kindergarten, 239 elementary schools, 86 junior and 26 secondary schools currently providing educational opportunities to more than 200,000 students in the Southern region.
