Farmers in the Southern region said that they have manage to obtain better harvest following the distribution of a new type of maize seed by the Agriculture Ministry’s branch office in the region. Mai-Aini, 9 July 2011 –Farmers in the Southern region said that they have manage to obtain better harvest following the distribution of a new type of maize seed by the Agriculture Ministry’s branch office in the region.
Mr. Tesfamichael Michael, member of the Mai-Aini Farmers Association, said that he used to harvest 20 quintals of maize through the then existing type of seed. In contrast, he is now harvesting 50 quintals.
Mr. Yonas Gebrekirstos, expert in seed and anti-pesticides in the Ministry of Agriculture’s branch office in the sub-zone, indicated that the new maize seed was introduced this year, and has been freely distributed to farmers engaged in fruits and vegetables farming. He further pointed out that there are plants to distribute the new type of seed to all farmers in the sub-zone.
