Adi-Quala, 12 July 2011 – A total of 130 farmers in Adi-Quala sub-zone have managed to harvest 2 to 3 times a year through putting under cultivation farmland below Sememo Dam on the basis of irrigation. They have also managed to cultivate select seeds, fruits and vegetables without waiting for the rainy season.

Recalling that they used to utilize the dam for drinking water only, the farming communities said that they are currently making use of the dam for irrigation framing throughout the year, thanks to the putting in place of modern infrastructure facilities made available to them by the Government at substantial investment.

Mr. Tekleweini Woldegebriel, expert in crops in the branch office of the Ministry of Agriculture in the sub-zone, stated that select maize seeds have been planted over 65 hectares below the Sememo Dam, in addition to pepper, tomato, vegetables and the like.

Modern drip irrigation has been introduced in a number of dams in the Southern region including Sememo, Sesewe, Ziban Sebo, Harnet and Dirko.
