Inhabitants of Gash-Barka region extend support to victims of volcanic eruption

The inhabitants of Gash-Barka region have contributed over 2 million Nakfa, 135 goats and 100 quintals of grain to victims of the volcanic eruption and earthquake in Sireru which occurred on June 12 and 14, according to reports from the regional Administration and Finance office. Barentu, 25 August 2011 – The inhabitants of Gash-Barka region have contributed over 2 million Nakfa, 135 goats and 100 quintals of grain to victims of the volcanic eruption and earthquake in Sireru which occurred on June 12 and 14, according to reports from the regional Administration and Finance office.

Pointing out that such gesture is part of the noble culture of the Eritrean society, the report added that the inhabitants of Laelai Gash sub-zone donated 410,000 Nakfa and 135 goats, while the inhabitants of Tessenei sub-zone contributed more than 316,000 Nakfa, and that of Golij sub-zone  90,000 Nakfa. Moreover, the inhabitants of the sub-zones of Agordat, Barentu and Forto-Sawa contributed 300,000 Nakfa, 250,000 Nakfa and 200,000 Nakfa respectively. The residents of Haikota and Dige sub-zones equally donated 100,000 Nakfa each.

Similarly, the inhabitants of the sub-zones of Gogne, Logo-Anseba Mensura, Molqui, Shambuko and Mogolo have contributed from 25 to 65 thousand Nakfa.

It is to be recalled that the regional Administration of Gash-Barka donated about 1 million Nakfa and material support to the same cause.

Meanwhile, the inhabitants pointed out that they were able to secure food supply for two years from last year’s harvest,  in addition to managing to extend voluntary support from their own resources, thus laying bare enemy allegations of the ‘existence of famine’ in Eritrea.
