The Administrator of Haikota sub-zone, Mr. Hamed Yusuf, called on farmers of fruits and vegetables to organize themselves in associations.
Haikota, 26 August 2011 – The Administrator of Haikota sub-zone, Mr. Hamed Yusuf, called on farmers of fruits and vegetables to organize themselves in associations.
In a meeting he conducted with the farmers, he said that though there exists over 5,000 hectares that can be put under cultivation through irrigation, only 2,000 has so far been cultivated. He stressed the importance of getting organizing so as to properly harness the natural resources at their disposal.
Mr. Michael Zerazgi, one of the farmers, stated on his part that 65 farmers have been organized in associations, and reminded all farming communities to take similar step.
The head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch office, Mr. Semere Gebremichael, explained that the office is exerting efforts to assist and encourage farmers of fruits and vegetables. He called on them to have a store at a site where they can directly supply products to customers.
Reports indicated that there exist 126 fruits and vegetables farmers in Haikota sub-zone.
