Asmara, 2 September 2011 – Vigorous efforts and investments made as regards expansion of health facilities nationwide have registered significant growth over the past 20 years since independence.
The Director of service-rendering institutions in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Berhane Debru, pointed out that efforts made during the first phase of the program were aimed at expanding health service- rendering institutions, especially in remote areas. He further indicated that focused on the renovation and construction of community-based health centers, in addition to controlling some diseases.
Reports indicated that in the early years of independence, there existed 16 hospitals, 5 health centers and 106 health stations in the country, but at present the number has grown to 28 hospitals, 56 health centers and 199 mother and child health-care centers.
Dr. Berhane also explained that the success achieved in the health sector is indeed satisfactory, and assured that efforts will be stepped up to enhance health service-rendering institutions.
