Illiteracy rate drops by 45 percent across the nation

In a statement the Ministry of Education issued in connection with International Literacy Day, illiteracy rate has been reduced by 45% .

Asmara, 8 September 2011 – In a statement the Ministry of Education issued in connection with International Literacy Day, illiteracy rate has been reduced by 45% .

The report noted that the experience acquired so far and the progress made in the preparation of textbooks, as well as promoting adult education program has registered gratifying outcome.

According to reports, there exist 258 adult education stations in Anseba region, 186 in the Southern region, 170 in Gash-Barka region, 123 in Northern Red Sea region, 14 in Southern Red Sea region and 91 in the Central region. Currently, more than 40 thousand citizens are attending adult education program, the report added.

This year’s International Literacy Day is marked for the 46th time at global level and the 10th time in Eritrea under the theme “Eradicating Illiteracy for Peace”.
