The number of health personnel has risen by 200% at the national level, and as a result the quality of health service is showing improvement.
Asmara, 13 September 2011 – The number of health personnel has risen by 200% at the national level, and as a result the quality of health service is showing improvement.
The director of Human Resource Development in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Andom Ogbamariam, indicated that the number of skilled manpower which had been below 1,500 during the early days of independence has now reached about 4,500. He further stated that over 1,200 health personnel graduated in PHD, BA degree, diploma and certificate this year.
Recalling that one doctor was looking after more than 25 thousand patients in the early days after independence, Dr. Andom said that at the present the number has dropped to 15 thousand. Moreover, he explained that one nurse takes care of 3 thousand patients which meet the set goal of World Health Organization.
Pointing out that 60 percent of members of the Health Ministry are graduates in various medical fields, Dr. Andom expressed conviction that the Ministry would achieve the standard of the WHO in few years which demands 70 percent of skilled manpower.
