Mendefera, 3 October 2011 – Farmers in the Southern region commended the government endeavors to introduce modern farming at substantial expenditure.  They said that the putting in place of various agricultural infrastructures and disseminating vital agricultural information amply demonstrates the Government’s commitment to upgrade the living standard of citizens.

Pointing out that the availability of 139 dams and 265 ponds have created conducive ground for the development of modern irrigational farming, the farmers said that the introduction of drip irrigation in particular is making due contribution in conserving water and boosting production. They further stressed the need to further expand such farming practices.

Mr. Eyob Tekeste, one of those engaged in the implementation of drip irrigation project in Azayeha Dam, said that efforts to promote soil and water conservation in the region are bearing fruitful outcome.

Meanwhile, Eng. Adem Abdelwas’e, in charge of the Azayeha Dam project, indicated that over 52 hectares have already been put under cultivation.

The project is being undertaken by the Government and development partners at a cost of about 8 million Nakfa.
