Death rate of children under 5 drops significantly in Northern Red Sea region

At an assessment meeting they conducted, the administrators of hospitals and health personnel in the Northern Red Sea region disclosed that death rate of children under 5 has dropped significantly in the region. The introduction of community-based environmental sanitation in 10 villages has also registered tangible change, and that the construction of toilets in 61 villages has ensured family health and environment sanitation, according to reports.
Massawa, 8 October 2011 –  At an assessment meeting they conducted, the administrators of hospitals and health personnel in the Northern Red Sea region disclosed that death rate of children under 5 has dropped significantly in the region. The introduction of community-based environmental sanitation in 10 villages has also registered tangible change, and that the construction of toilets in 61 villages has ensured family health and environment sanitation, according to reports.

Stating that a number of diseases have been witnessed in the region due to lack of hygiene, Mr. Hagos Milkias, coordinator of environmental sanitation in the branch office of the Ministry of Health, said that 50% of the rural inhabitants have become beneficiaries of toilet facilities.

Similarly, Dr. Yakob Hassen, medical director of Afabet Hospital, said that the inhabitants have managed to overcome diseases emanating from lack of hygiene thanks to the intensive campaigns undertaken.
