Select seeds cultivated in Molqui sub-zone have been found effective and hence, cultivation will be expanded starting from the next harvest season, according to Mr. Atewebrhan Yosief, Head of the Branch office of the Ministry of Agriculture in the sub-zone.
Molqui, 12 October 2011- Select seeds cultivated in Molqui sub-zone have been found effective and hence, cultivation will be expanded starting from the next harvest season, according to Mr. Atewebrhan Yosief, Head of the Branch office of the Ministry of Agriculture in the sub-zone.
He indicated that out of the more than 11 thousands hectares cultivated this year, 7,300 hectares have been cultivated with a variety of sorghum and 3, 400 with millet. Similar seeds would be cultivated for experimental purpose, Mr. Atewebrhan added.He further pointed out that the selected sorghum bears fruit in a short period, besides resisting weed and pests and has received acceptance by the farmers.
Among the farmers Mr. Tekle Berhe and Mr. Okbai Hidray indicated that they gained a lot from the advice and education provided by the Ministry of Agriculture in terms of boosting their harvest. They also said that they plan to expand their cultivation.
Ato Atewebrhan underlined that Molqui sub-zone is suitable for the cultivation of any kind of crop, and advised farmers to engage in cultivating cereal crops and fruits without confining themselves to the common ones.
