The awareness of women regarding health care in the Southern region continues to gain momentum thanks to the efforts made by the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) and partners, disclosed Mr. Salha Adem, head of the NUEW branch in the region. She made the remarks during a lecture on health issue offered to over 450 members of the branch.
Mendefera, 26 October 2011 – The awareness of women regarding health care in the Southern region continues to gain momentum thanks to the efforts made by the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) and partners, disclosed Mr. Salha Adem, head of the NUEW branch in the region. She made the remarks during a lecture on health issue offered to over 450 members of the branch.
The participants of the meeting noted the importance of the lecture in view of the fact that ensuring mother’s health is a basis for building a healthy family, and called for organizing similar lectures.
Both Ms. Tiebe Gebru and Nasira Adem commended the endeavors being exerted by the NUEW and government agencies to promote mothers’ health, and thereby reinforce Eritrean mothers’ contribution.
The director general of Social Service Department in the region, Mr. Tesfatsion Girmai, said on his part that the participation of women in the region in health care and education have registered encouraging outcome. Various programs are being mapped out by the department in collaboration with partners to enhance women’s economic capacity, he added.
Reports indicated that mother and child mortality rate has dropped by 50%, while women’s participation in education has shown 44% growth.
