Irrigation farming in Forto-Sawa sub-zone registering marked progress

The farmers engaged in irrigation farming in Forto-Sawa sub-zone are registering marked progress leading to improved standard of living, stated Mr. Ogbai Gebreamlak, head of the Agriculture Ministry branch office in the sub-zone. Forto-Sawa, 25 November 2011 – The farmers engaged in irrigation farming in Forto-Sawa sub-zone are registering marked progress leading to improved standard of living, stated Mr. Ogbai Gebreamlak, head of the Agriculture Ministry branch office in the sub-zone.

Pointing out that previously agricultural harvest in the area was limited due to inadequate rainfall, he said that the farmers have taken the initiative of putting under cultivation farming land near Sawa River through irrigation. As a result, Mr. Ogbai indicated that the farmers are in the process of supplying their products to the market.

Moreover, he said that modern irrigation farming is being applied in most areas of the sub-zone including Forto, Telaai, Homib and Moleber. So far, over 2,800 hectares have been put under cultivation on the part of 322 farmers, he elaborated.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ogbai stressed the need to construct dams and ponds so as to enrich underground water.
