Asmara, 2 February 2012- As part of the investments made to ensure food security, vigorous efforts are being made to strengthen forestation, soil and water conservation, according to reports.
The economic development unit of the Central region indicated that about 700 hectares have been terraced, 134 cubic meters of water diversion scheme constructed and cactus tree seedlings planted in 166 hectares in 19 villages through the Summer Work Program. Members of national associations, the Defense Force and the community participated in the program.
Besides, tree planting activities have been undertaken in the streets of the capital, Asmara. Reports form Agricultural Ministry’s branch office in the region also indicated that the drip irrigation method introduced over 95 hectares in 4 villages has registered satisfactory outcome.
Two additional micro-dams have been constructed in the region along with the renovation of three others in which the cultivation of about 150 hectares has been carried.
There exist a total of 67 micro-dams in the Central region, region indicated.
