Southern Red Sea region: Vigorous efforts made to raise public awareness in handling of hides

Vigorous efforts are being made to enhance public awareness regarding the proper harnessing of hides and skin resources, according to the head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch office in the Southern Red sea region, Dr. Yonas Woldu. Assab, 9 February 2012- Vigorous efforts are being made to enhance public awareness regarding the proper harnessing of hides and skin resources, according to the head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch office in the Southern Red sea region, Dr. Yonas Woldu.

He explained that in the year 2011 about 10 thousand livestock in the region were slaughtered. However, only 2,500 hides and skins were sent to tannery centers, and called on members of the public to judiciously handle hides and related products. He further indicated that the number of vegetable farmers in the region is on the rise, and that efforts are underway to practise vegetables and fruits farming during the summer season.

Dr. Yonas also stated that around 5 thousand chickens were handed to farmers which initiative made due contribution in improving the livelihood of the inhabitants. An additional 12,500 chickens would also be handed to farmers this year, he added.

There are about 500,000 livestock in the Southern Red Sea region, and that vaccination is given to them in which the local inhabitants demonstrate active participation.
