Efforts underway to reduce illiteracy rate

Vigorous efforts are under way to reduce the illiteracy rate in the country, Mr. Gebrezgi Demam, Director General of Adult Education and Media in the Education Ministry disclosed.

Asmara, 17 February 2012 – Vigorous efforts are under way to reduce the illiteracy rate in the country, Mr. Gebrezgi Demam, Director General of Adult Education and Media in the Education Ministry disclosed.

 

Comparing with previous human resources, he explained that there was no enough education material for illiteracy eradication in the past and indicted that currently enough material is available, and that there is expectation for commendable outcome.

Stating that Illiteracy eradication is the basis for development, Mr. Gebrezgi noted that according to a study conducted in 2008, it has been confirmed that 65% of the Eritrean people could read and write. He further indicated that more efforts would be exerted for reinforcing it.

Mr. Gebrezgi also indicated that conducting special investment for those citizens deprived of education opportunities and creating the opportunity of education for those village administrators from remote areas in order to upgrade their knowledge and develop their administration skills as well as reviving extension programs, are among the future programs of the Department.

Moreover, he noted the role of educated nationals could play in development endeavors and reminded citizens to make good use of the education opportunities thus provided.
