Asmara, 21 February 2012 – The Fred Hollows Intra Ocular Laboratory has raised production due to the growing demand worldwide, and currently 1.9 million people have become beneficiaries, Mr. Mengisteab Tewoldemedhin, manager of the factory, disclosed.
He said that the IOL produces 200 thousands intra ocular lenses on yearly basis and exports 2.2 million to more than 50 countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania and Europe.
He further explained that the intra ocular lenses meet international standard, and that the laboratory has been awarded different certificates and as a result its demand has increased in the international market. More efforts are being exerted for its sustainability, Mr. Mengisteab added.
He further explained that 95% of the production is for export purpose and the 5% for local market, and that the price inside the country is 90 Nakfa.
Mr. Gebretinsae Mebrahtu, technical expert in the laboratory, on his part said that the introduction of modern technology has enabled them in saving energy and time and in producing quality products.
Likewise, Ms. Elsa Goitom explained that the IOL’s standard measurement is up to international standard, in addition to providing quality products for the international market.
