Central region making effort to introduce temperate fruits

Effort is being made to expand the ongoing activities to introduce temperate fruits in the Central region, explained Eng. Abraham Daniel, head of the branch office of the Agriculture Ministry in the region.

Asmara, 28 February, 2012- Effort is being made to expand the ongoing activities to introduce temperate fruits in the Central region, explained Eng. Abraham Daniel, head of the branch office of the Agriculture Ministry in the region.

He told ERINA that the fruits planted at Itaber and Adi-Nifas are in good condition.

Eng. Abraham further indicated that the temperate fruits include peach, apple and olive trees and that last year 20 hectares had been put under plantation at Itaber Mountain and that this year the infrastructure is in place to plant 25 hectares in Shimanugus Laeli, Shimanugus Tahtai and Mekerka.

Eng. Abraham also pointed out that the plantation of the fruits at Itaber was as a pilot project and that it has dual importance for fruits planted on mountains through terracing which have b outcome as well as reforestation of the area.

He reiterated that different training programs have been organized to raise the awareness of farmers and recommended that people from the cities could also plant the fruits in their respective compounds
