Keren, 6 March 2012 – Mr. Arefaine Berhe, Minister of Agriculture, said that as a result of the substantial endeavors made by the Anseba regional Administration to construct macro and micro dams in different localities with a view to encouraging farmers, boost agricultural production and animal feed, promising outcome has been registered as regards producing vegetables and fruits and dairy farms.
The Minister, during an inspection tour of horticultural activities and dairy farms in the sub-zones of Habero, Hamelmalo, Geleb, Hagaz and Elabered, called on farmers to step up their activities.
Stating that the Ministry would continue supplying farmers with professional guidance and select seeds, Mr. Arefaine reminded farmers to expand irrigation farms through judicious use of water, introduce cultivation of green animal feed and work in coordination to satisfy local and export demands.
Likewise, Mr. Gergis Girmai, Administrator of Anseba region, explained that land that could be cultivated through water diversion has already been identified and that there is plan to put in place the necessary infrastructure. He
further underlined that through concerted efforts by the regional Administration and the public last year, it was possible to enrich surface and underground water resources, and that effort to this end continues.
