Community based sanitation program in Southern region significantly contributes in controlling the prevalence of communicable diseases

Senafe, 8 April 2012- The community based sanitation and health services is significantly contributing in controlling the prevalence of communicable diseases, disclosed Mr. Mohammed Mohammed-Saleh, head of environmental health in the region, at an assessment meeting conducted in Senafe sub-zone.

According to him, the objective of the program is to control the prevalence of communicable diseases due to lack of sanitation and that so far 23 villages have been beneficiaries of latrines and the other remaining are on the process.

Dr. Tekeste Araya, head of environmental health in the Ministry of Health, on his part expressed that efforts are being exerted to ensure public health and especially to reduce and control the prevalence of communicable diseases on mothers and children through community based health services and sanitation programs.

Administrator of Senafe sub-zone, Mr. Bereket Tekeste, explained that the community based sanitation program is registering encouraging result and that integrated efforts are paramount in order to bring about behavioral change among the society for better results.

The inhabitants recalling that due to lack of sanitation they were victims of different diseases noted that with the awareness and education they received they were able to build latrines and that their health is ensured.
