Extensive soil and water conservation activities being undertaken in Mendefera sub-zone

Nationals in Mendefera sub-zone are carrying out campaigns dealing with conservation of soil and water, as well as renovation of roads and water wells.

Mendefera, 14 April, 2012 – Nationals in Mendefera sub-zone are carrying out campaigns dealing with conservation of soil and water, as well as renovation of roads and water wells.

Mr. Kidane Firuy, head of economic development unit in the locality, indicated that tens of thousands of citizens from the Administrative areas of Adi-Gaul, Berak, Adi-Kemene, Kudofelasi, Geza-Gobo, Adi-Mengonti, Klewlie, Aregit-Mekrem and Suri-Mehramgiedo are participating in the campaign. He further indicated that 65 Km-long terraces and 350 cubic meters of water diversion walls have been constructed by the inhabitants, besides preparing 50 hectares of farm land and renovating micro-dams and wells.

Among the participants, Ms. Alem Ogbasilasie and Mr. Woldai Kidane, said that they were motivated to be engaged in the undertakings as similar tasks carried out in the past have brought about the desired change in boosting underground water level in the area.

Mr. Yemaneab Kidane and Ms. Lemlem Aradom on their part indicated that the prevailing transport problem in their villages has been solved with the renovation of rough roads on the basis of popular participation.

Mr. Admekom Zemo, Administrator of Adi-Gaul Administrative area, explained that all the villages in the locality have been inter-connected through roads.
