Leather products drawing increased foreign demand: Ministry

The Agriculture Ministry pointed out that leather products have drawn increased foreign demand in the wake of endeavors exerted to standardize the nation’s leather production. Asmara, 21 April, 2012 – The Agriculture Ministry pointed out that leather products have drawn increased foreign demand in the wake of endeavors exerted to standardize the nation’s leather production.

Mr. Gebremariam Hagos, leather production expert in the Ministry, indicated that 75% of leather products from 5 tannery companies is being exported to international organizations and that an income amounting to 3 million Nakfa is being was secured in the year 2011.

The Ministry further stated that it has started to work diligently to do away with unbalanced prices and wastage of leather in rural areas through raising people’s awareness as regards leather management and processing. Experts indicate that leather should be available for tannery within 5 hours after slaughter, and that leather collected during holidays in Asmara can be of good quality only if treated appropriately.

Mr. Gebremariam expressed conviction that more endeavors are called for so as to meet the desired level of leather production and standard.
