Tesenei, 11 May 2012 – The Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Tesenei sub-zone explained that effective handling is being witnessed as regards dairy cattle distributed to 35 families in the town with a view to boosting milk production.

Mr. Tesfu Kiflom, in charge of boosting milk and dairy development in the branch office, indicated that the program was launched in 2008, and that distribution was made at a rate of one cattle for a family that could consistently ensure green feed.

The branch office said that 28 out of the cattle thus distributed have already given birth to calves and have been forwarded to other families for a similar purpose. It also indicated that veterinary services are being given to the cattle, and that they have played vital role in improving the livelihood of the beneficiary families.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Osman Shengeb, who asserted that the cattle belong to first-class breed costing more than 30 thousand Nakfa for a single cow, expressed conviction that the implementation of the program demonstrates the government’s commitment to improve the livelihood of citizens.

Mr. Saleh Osman on his part explained that reliable green feed harvest from farmlands along Gash River has been a stepping stone for increasing milk production on the part of the beneficiary families.

Mr. Tesfu indicated that expansion of the program depends on timely settlement of the loans given in kind, and that the families should extend a helping hand towards the realization of the set goal.
