Call made for endeavors to transform internet service institutions to digital information centers

The Ministry of Transport and Communications called on the owners of internet service institutions to exert efforts to transform their organizations into centers of reliable and productive digital information in a meeting it held on May 11. Asmara, 12 May, 2012 – The Ministry of Transport and Communications called on the owners of internet service institutions to exert efforts to transform their organizations into centers of reliable and productive digital information in a meeting it held on May 11.

In the meeting in which participants included representatives of the NUEYS, the PFDJ Research and Documentation section and internet café owners, Mr. Mekonen Fisehatsion, director general of the Communications Department, indicated that the primary concern is to assess the quality and relevance of digital information accessible in the pertinent institutions, besides the concern to increase popular awareness as regards digital libraries. He further indicated that the availability of written digital information is growing in the Central region, and that joint venture is essential to attain the set goal.

The Communications Department stated that a program has been mapped out pursuing the purpose to extend internet band width and thereby promote the availability and accessibility of digital libraries, and that the available digital library has been enhancing its book resource with a view to meeting demand from college students and promote the culture of reading.

Reports indicate that there exist 130 internet cafes in the Central region.
