The fruits and vegetables farmers Association in the Southern region said in a meeting it conducted that a growing trend has been noted as regards the number of Association members and their aggregate production. Mendefera, 12 May, 2012 – The fruits and vegetables farmers Association in the Southern region said in a meeting it conducted that a growing trend has been noted as regards the number of Association members and their aggregate production.

Mr. Negasi Tesfamichael, chairman of the Association, indicated that members of the Association have been harvesting twice or three times a year in line with the available agricultural infrastructure in the region and the vital experience shared among them. Moreover, the Association has earned a total income of 1.3 million Nakfa over the past year. Indicating that the Association is in a position to own a store, office and sales outlet, he said that its cherished goal is to create Reliable basis for the advantage of producers and end users in the region through ensuring the availability of stores and sales outlets in all sub-zones.

Mr. Zerit Tewoldebirhan, head of economic development department in the regional Administration, expressed hope that the Association would shortly meet the local demand in line with the growing output being registered by its members.

Mr. Bahta Tedros, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the region, said that dams and micro-dams with an overall capacity of 55 million cubic meters have already been built in the region in line with the goal of boosting horticulture output, and that a number of farmers have introduced irrigation farming, besides the increasing practice of dairy and poultry farming.
In conclusion of the meeting, the Association members elected new committee members.

The fruits and vegetables farmers Association in the Southern region was established in 2000, with 4 thousand of its members owning a total of 10,000 hectares of farmland.
