Tesenei-Aligidir agricultural project contributing its share in ensuring food security

Farmers of Aligidir agricultural project expressed that they are being able to produce yield throughout the year as the result of the huge investment made by the Government. Tesenei, 13 May 2012- Farmers of Aligidir agricultural project expressed that they are being able to produce yield throughout the year as the result of the huge investment made by the Government.

They told ERINA that as the result of the Government’s huge investment on agricultural infrastructure they have been able to double fold production.

Mr. Okbai Kibreab and Ms. Freweini Woldetensae explained that previously they were confined to expecting the one rainy season to cultivate one type of crop and in a minimal amount, and that currently they have been able to harvest variety of harvest three times in a year.

Mr. Yemane Gebretensae, manager of the agricultural project, expressed that the agricultural project was concentrated on cultivating one type of crop and that concerted effort has been exerted to improve the irrigation system and there by to enable farmers produce yield through out the year and play their part in ensuring food security.

He further said that currently cotton is cultivated on 40 hectares of land through irrigation and that cotton produced last summer had a high demand in the local market.

He also noted that 3,500 hectares of land is being prepared in a bid to enlarge the agricultural project.

According to the manager there are currently 90 farmers cultivating corn and green animal fodder beyond the dam.
