Asmara, 5 June 2012 – The inhabitants of Gala-Nefhi sub-zone are engaged in popular afforestation campaigns with a view to registering an exemplary accomplishment in this regard.
Mr. Tesfom Mesfin, forestry expert in the sub-zone, explained that the inhabitants of 32 villages in the locality are enthusiastically involved in the undertaking. For the sustainability of the task, the inhabitants should preserve all wood enclosures, he added. He further indicated that the inhabitants of Adi-Raesi have registered encouraging outcome as regards soil and water conservation activities.
Among Adi-Raesi inhabitants, Mr. Michael Tesfahiwet and Mr. Tesfamichael Tekle, said that every member of the village planted 50 to70 seedlings. They further explained that the inhabitants of the village are individually engaged in protecting the new trees in line with the prevailing sense of belongingness towards them.
Reports by the Agriculture Ministry indicate that a total of 692 hectares have been afforested based on popular campaigns in the entire sub-zone since 2007, besides the availability of nurseries in Adi-Hawesha, Merhano and Himbirti.
