The city Administration of Massawa indicated that endeavors as regards preservation of art deco buildings in the port city have registered commendable outcome. Massawa, 9 June 2012 – The city Administration of Massawa indicated that endeavors as regards preservation of art deco buildings in the port city have registered commendable outcome.

Ms. Fana Tesfamariam, Mayor of Massawa, explained that various restoration accomplishments have been made in line with the national program to preserve archaeological relics and historic objects there. She further indicated that the Government has began renewing art deco buildings around Tiwalet and Wushti-batsi’e as it is demanding for individuals to handle the task financially, time-wise and in terms of expertise.

So far, the buildings of the city’s Municipal Administration office, Post Office, Gurgusum Guest House and the former Maritime building have been renovated by Horn Construction Company, and the task is in progress. The residents of Massawa should raise their awareness regarding the significance of art deco edifices, the Mayor added.

Ms. Fana also explained that the City Administration has been engaged in serious study since 2007 as regards residential building complexes needed to be given in return to the residents affected by the renovation task. They are moving to pre-arranged places, she added.

Ms. Fana further stated that preservation of art deco buildings is the responsibility of every citizen, and that preservation of historic traces of main urban centers is a solid means of bestowing national legacies to the young generation.
