Asmara, 11 June 2012 – The National Blood Bank said that increased endeavors are vital for attaining the desired number of voluntary blood donors. It made the remarks in connection with World Blood Donors Day on June 14.
Stating that the Day is being commemorated under the theme “Every Blood Donor is a Hero,” Dr. Yifdeamlak Tesfamariam, Director of the National Blood Bank, gave detailed account as regards provision of adequate blood in
surgical treatment. He further indicated that the amount of blood donation by volunteers, which constituted 68% of the total supply in 2001, presently stands at 90%.
Dr. Giotom Mebrahtu from the Health Ministry’s Administration pointed out on his part that considerable accomplishment has been made in line with the goal of ensuring safe and adequate blood supply, and that there exist well-trained staff in fulfilling the task.
Explaining that voluntary blood donation used to be unfamiliar chore in the early years of the Blood Bank’s establishment, Mr. Michael Fiseha, director of Keih Bahri Secondary School, expressed conviction that higher popular awareness has been prevalent in the Eritrean society.
