Ministry commends popular participation in supporting families of martyrs

The Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare commended the popular participation being ensured by citizens inside the country and abroad as regards supporting families of martyrs. Indicating that a total of 10 million Nakfa was paid in the past year to families of fallen heroes on the basis of popular contributions, it stated that the amount of such contributions over the past 7 years stands at 130 million Nakfa. Asmara, 18 June 2012 – The Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare commended the popular participation being ensured by citizens inside the country and abroad as regards supporting families of martyrs. Indicating that a total of 10 million Nakfa was paid in the past year to families of fallen heroes on the basis of popular contributions, it stated that the amount of such contributions over the past 7 years stands at 130 million Nakfa.

The Ministry further indicated that the task of shouldering support of families of martyrs was initiated in 2004 by some citizens residing in the Diaspora and began to be pursued by nationals inside the country in 2008. There are numerous citizens who demonstrated readiness to assume lifetime responsibility of supporting families of fallen heroes, it added.

Reports by the Ministry indicate that the majority of nationals who have shouldered such responsibility constitute youths, and that this is a demonstration of the prevailing readiness among youths to fulfill national obligation.

It also indicated that there are Eritrean citizens financially supporting up to 50 families of martyrs, and that families of fallen heroes are witnessing improvement in their livelihood.
