Mai-Kuak Dam a stepping stone to improvement of livelihood: Inhabitants of Adi-Guroto Administrative area
The inhabitants of Adi-Guroto Administrative area, Areza sub-zone, said that they are in a position to improve their livelihood in line with the start of irrigation farming based on Mai-Kuak Dam. Areza, 26 June 2012 – The inhabitants of Adi-Guroto Administrative area, Areza sub-zone, said that they are in a position to improve their livelihood in line with the start of irrigation farming based on Mai-Kuak Dam.
Among the inhabitants, Mr. Tesfamichael Berhane, explained that they are enjoying abundant water supply from the dam, besides irrigation farming activities in the area, which are on the rise. He further indicated that an impressive wood enclosure has been established in the surrounding mountains of the dam, and that the measure taken has saved it from being filled by sediment.
Rev. Araya Netsereab and Abrihaley Tesfahunei, among the local inhabitants engaged in irrigation farming, asserted that availability of such water supply has become a motivating element for boosting farming capacities.
Reports indicate that 131 dams and 250 micro-dams have been built in the Southern region, and that farmers in the different areas have been encouraged to practice irrigation farming.
