Call made on apicultural farmers in Adi-Keih sub-zone to finalize preparations for the harvest season

Adi-Keih, 11 July 2012 – The Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Adi-Keih sub-zone called on apicultural farmers to finalize preparations for the harvest season and move their beehive sites to areas where abundant nectar is available.

Indicating that the Eastern Escarpment villages of Egila, Karibosa, Sibiraso, Mesegolo-Zula and Himeret are well-known for honey production, Mr. Tesfai Gebrekidan from the branch office said that farmers should effectively exploit nectar reserves in the locality.

One of the farmers, Mr. Yusuf Khelil explained that he moves his beehives seasonally to areas where better nectar supply exist, and that he harvests 12 quintals of honey within 6 months.

Mr. Tesfai pointed out that 1,100 traditional and 202 modern beehives are available in the sub-zone, and that a 10 quintal harvest was witnessed per single harvest time last year.
